Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently made an exciting announcement during a virtual inauguration event, shedding light on the future of the Namma Metro system. The eagerly awaited Yellow Line extension, connecting Electronic City to the extended Green Line on Tumakuru Road, is slated to open its doors to commuters by April 2024.

The announcement came as part of the virtual inauguration of two significant Namma Metro stretches, linking K R Puram to Byappanahalli and Kengeri to Challaghatta. Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the occasion, not only unveiling these stretches but also flagging off the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor in Ghaziabad. Yellow Line Extension: Bridging the IT Corridor

The Yellow Line extension, stretching from R V Road to Bommasandra, covers an impressive distance of 19 kilometers. Simultaneously, the Green Line expansion on Tumakuru Road, spanning 3 kilometers from Nagasandra to Madavara, promises to be a significant game-changer for Bengaluru’s commuters.

Notably, the Yellow Line directly caters to one of the city’s major IT corridors, Electronic City. The extension of this line is expected to ease the daily commute for thousands of tech professionals, reducing travel time and traffic congestion.

Historic Moment for Namma Metro

What makes this announcement even more remarkable is that these extensions are unveiled after the commencement of commercial operations, a first in Namma Metro’s history. The two new stretches, K R Puram to Byappanahalli and Kengeri to Challaghatta, were opened to the public on October 9. These extensions, totaling 4 kilometers in length, are already proving to be valuable additions to the metro network.

A Plea for Continued Expansion

In his address, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also called upon the Central Government to expedite the approval for Phase III of the Namma Metro project. The State Government had already submitted a detailed project report (DPR) for the Kempapura to J P Nagar 4th phase and Hosahalli to Kadabagere line under Phase III. These two lines collectively span 45 kilometers and require a financial commitment of Rs 15,611 crore.

Additionally, the DPR is currently in preparation for Phase-3A of the Bangalore Metro Rail project, which aims to connect Sarjapur to Hebbal over a 37-kilometer stretch. These ambitious expansion plans signify the city’s commitment to enhancing its public transportation network.

Future Projections: Promising Ridership

According to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s projections, the Pink Line, part of Phase II of the Namma Metro project, running from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara, will be operational by March 2025. Furthermore, the ORR-Airport Line, extending from Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) via K R Pura, Nagawara, and Hebbal, is anticipated to serve the public by 2026.

These new lines are expected to dramatically increase Namma Metro’s ridership, possibly reaching a staggering 20 lakh (2 million) passengers by 2026. Currently, the operational network spans 74 kilometers, and more than 7 lakh (700,000) passengers rely on its services daily.
